2024's Sally Katary Memorial Lecture took place on Saturday 1st June 2024 at 1:00pm EST as a hybrid In person / virtual event held online.
The presenter was Dr. Eltayeb Abbas, (Assistant Minister for Archaeological Affairs at the Grand Egyptian Museum and Professor of Egyptology at Minya University. As Director at the Grand Egyptian Museum). His presentation was entitled:
'The Grand Egyptian Museum'.
Once completed, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will be the world’s largest archaeological museum and house over 100,000 objects dating from prehistoric to Roman periods. Most notably, almost all objects from Tutankhamun’s tomb will be on display for the very first time. Dr. Abbas will present an overview of this massive project, highlight some star objects that will be exhibited in its galleries, and report the latest progress made toward the full opening of the museum to the public.
Professor Abbas earned his PhD from the University of Liverpool in 2009. He held a Fulbright Fellowship at Brown University in 2012-13 and was an Associate Researcher at the Institut français d’archéologie orientale du Caire in 2015-18. He has published extensively on the subjects of burial customs, funerary ritual and beliefs in the afterlife. Professor Abbas is also deputy director of excavations at the Graeco-Roman cemetery site Tuna el-Gebel, where he discovered a large tomb complex containing over sixty mummies.
This was a fund-raising event in aid of the Sally L.D. Katary Travel Scholarship.
